MnDOT continues monitoring truck traffic on the Hwy 43 bridge in Winona

ROCHESTER, Minn. — The Minnesota Department of Transportation continues to monitor semi-truck traffic crossing the Highway 43 bridge over the Mississippi River in Winona.

Area residents may have noticed a recent increase in the number of trucks hauling frac sand across the Highway 43 bridge. The bridge is safe for any legally-loaded vehicle to use, including trucks carrying frac sand. At this time the frac sand trucks have no impact on the safety of the Highway 43 bridge, because the trucks weigh within the legal load limits.

To ensure freight haulers use the bridge appropriately, MnDOT continues to work with the State Patrol to increase enforcement monitoring at the bridge. A weigh-in-motion scale located near the bridge enhances enforcement capabilities. The data collected shows that all the frac sand trucks are legally loaded, and have had no weight violations.

All truck traffic must weigh no more than 80,000 pounds. This went into effect in summer 2010. The Highway 43 bridge is negatively impacted by an overweight trucks, not by a greater number of legally-loaded trucks.

MnDOT inspects the Highway 43 bridge annually, and the 2011 inspection showed the bridge remains structurally sound.
