Dresbach Bridge bicycle and pedestrian accommodations study complete
Study recommends structural connections
ROCHESTER, Minn. – The bicycle and pedestrian feasibility study for the Interstate 90 Dresbach Bridge project is complete. The recommendation is to include structural connections that would allow building a bicyclist and pedestrian path across the bridge in the future.
After meeting with the La Crosse Area Planning Committee earlier this year, the Minnesota Department of Transportation agreed to conduct a feasibility study to determine if a trail system was viable and if the new bridge could provide options for a future trail system.
Factors included in the recommendation:
- Meet the 2035 Coulee Region Bicycle Plan’s recommendation for designing the capacity of bicycle and pedestrian accommodation on the Dresbach Bridge.
- Allow flexibility for potential future trail development within the design-life of the bridge (100 years).
- Minimize costs and risks to the taxpayers.
“Including the connection on the new bridge for future bicyclist and pedestrian accommodations keeps with national policies that promote biking and walking. It is also consistent with LAPC’s vision and long range planning for this corridor. The connections allow the possibility and minimize initial costs to the taxpayer,” said Jai Kalsy, Dresbach Bridge project manager.
The bicycle and pedestrian accommodations study will be included in the Dresbach Bridge Environmental Assessment. The EA will be available for public comment at an open house Wednesday, Jan. 25, from 5 - 8 p.m. at the La Crescent High School gym – 1301 Lancer Blvd., La Crescent.
