Highway 14 traffic switches in Rochester begin Aug. 1

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Motorists will experience new restrictions and detours at 15th Avenue Southeast/Marion Road and 11th Avenue Southeast in Rochester, as work continues on the Highway 14 reconstruction project.

Buses and large trucks traveling southbound on 15th Avenue Southeast/Marion Road will be restricted from turning right onto westbound Highway 14 beginning Monday, Aug. 1.

The restriction, originally scheduled for the end of June, is necessary as crews reconstruct the turn lane. All other vehicles may continue turning right during the work.

Detour for buses and large trucks:

East on Highway 14, south on Eastgate Drive, west on Eastwood Road, north on Marion Road and then back to Highway 14.

The Highway 14/11th Avenue Southeast intersection will partially close beginning Tuesday, Aug. 2, while crews replace the storm sewer lines and install new traffic signals.

Motorists will experience single lane traffic on eastbound and westbound 11th Avenue Southeast.

Highway 14 traffic will no longer be able to turn left onto 11th Avenue Southeast, and 11th Avenue Southeast traffic will no longer be able to turn left onto Highway 14.

Detour for 11th Avenue Southeast to westbound Highway 14:

West on 16th Street Southeast, north on 3rd Avenue Southeast and then back to Highway 14.

All work will be complete by mid-August, weather permitting.

The work is part of the Highway 14 reconstruction project, which will include new traffic signals at Third Avenue, Eighth Avenue, 11th Avenue and Marion Road. The project also will include adding bike lanes and landscaping, installing fiber-optic cable, resurfacing the road and closing multiple access points to improve the overall safety of Highway 14.

Rochester Sand and Gravel, a division of Mathy Construction, is the prime contractor for this $5.9 million project, scheduled to be completed in early August, weather permitting.

Motorists should be advised that Olmsted County’s 37th Street Northwest/County Road 22 resurfacing project from Highway 63 to Highway 52 began May 2. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes during peak traffic hours.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation urges motorists to always drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
