Hwy 14 traffic switches in Rochester begin May 9

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Motorists will no longer be able to cross Hwy 14 at Eighth Avenue Southeast beginning Monday, May 9, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The closure is necessary while crews conduct underground utility work.

Eighth Avenue Southeast will reopen to through traffic at the end of July, weather permitting.

The underground utility work is part of the Hwy 14 reconstruction project, which will include new traffic signals at Third Avenue, Eighth Avenue, 11th Avenue and Marion Road. The project also will include adding bike lanes and landscaping, installing fiber-optic cable, resurfacing the road and closing multiple access points to improve the overall safety of Hwy 14.

Rochester Sand and Gravel, a division of Mathy Construction, is the prime contractor for this $5.9 million project, scheduled to be completed in early August, weather permitting.

For more information about the Hwy 14 reconstruction project, visit www.dot.state.mn.us/d6/projects/hwy14inrochester/index.html.

Motorists should be advised that Olmsted County’s 37th Street Northwest/County Road 22 resurfacing project from Hwy 63 to Hwy 52 began May 2. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes during peak traffic hours.

Mn/DOT urges motorists to always drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
