I-35 and ramp closures in Steele County begin May 13
ROCHESTER, Minn.-Motorists should expect delays this weekend when I-35 closes from 11 p.m., May 13, to 11 a.m., May 15, as crews remove the existing Hwy 14 bridges over I-35 south of Owatonna. The ramp from westbound Hwy 14 to southbound I-35 also will close at noon May 13, through early November, as crews construct a new ramp.
During the weekend I-35 closure, northbound traffic will use the following detour:
- East on Hwy 14 to the Hwy 218 interchange
- West on Hwy 14 and then back to I-35.
Southbound I-35 traffic will use the new Hwy 14 entrance and exit ramps.
Motorists should expect delays on I-35 and Hwy 218 during the weekend closure. Flaggers will control traffic at the Hwy 14/Hwy 218 interchange.
The ramp closure from westbound Hwy 14 to southbound I-35 will have the following detour through early November:
- South on Steele County Road 45
- West on Hwy 30 and then back to southbound I-35
Both closures are weather-dependent. This work is part of a three-year reconstruction of Hwy 14 from Waseca to Owatonna, which includes a new interchange at I-35 and Hwy 14.
When the project is complete, motorists will experience a smoother ride surface and a safer highway.
Mathiowetz Construction Co., Sleepy Eye, Minn., is the prime contractor. The entire project is expected to be completed by June 2012, but the section from Waseca County Road 2 to Hwy 13 is expected to open in mid-summer 2011.
Mn/DOT urges motorists to always drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a roadway that has been blocked with barriers or cones.
