The northbound lanes of Interstate 35 in Steele County will reopen Oct. 4
ROCHESTER, Minn. – The northbound lanes of Interstate 35 in Steele County are scheduled to reopen Monday, Oct. 4, weather permitting, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
The northbound lanes of I-35 near Owatonna had been temporarily closed since July as work continued on the three-year reconstruction of Highway 14 from Waseca to Owatonna. The project also included construction of a new interchange at I-35 and Highway 14.
The ramp connecting westbound Highway 14 to northbound I-35 will no longer be closed on weekends. The ramp closure was necessary to reduce traffic back-ups on northbound I-35 during peak weekend travel times.
When the three-year project is complete, motorists will experience a smoother ride surface and a safer highway.
Mathiowetz Construction Co., Sleepy Eye, Minn., is the prime contractor for the $51.8 million project. The entire project is expected to be completed by June 2012.
MnDOT urges motorists to always drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a roadway that has been blocked with barriers or cones.
