Gusset plate repairs completed on the Highway 43 bridge in Winona
Bridge opens earlier than expected
ROCHESTER, Minn. —Crews completed gusset plate repairs today on the Highway 43 bridge over the Mississippi River in Winona and the bridge is now open to traffic according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Crews thought they may need to work on the repairs into next week, but the repairs were completed ahead of schedule.
Work began on Tuesday, June 29, because corrosion was found on several gusset plates during last week’s in-depth inspection of the bridge.
Full results from last week’s inspection will be available in mid-July.
The bridge is scheduled for a full rehabilitation or replacement in 2014 and MnDOT will continue to monitor and repair the bridge until then.
Trucks that weigh more than 40 tons continue to be restricted from crossing the bridge until further notice, including commercial vehicles and agricultural equipment.
urges motorists to always drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a roadway that has been blocked with barriers or cones.
