Repairs begin Tuesday on the Highway 43 bridge in Winona
ROCHESTER, Minn. — Motorists will encounter temporary lane closures and delays on the Highway 43 bridge over the Mississippi River in Winona beginning Tuesday, June 29, as crews repair three gusset plates on the bridge, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
The equipment needed to complete the repairs requires a lane closure, and traffic will be reduced to a single lane controlled by flaggers from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Both lanes will be open each evening after crews have completed their work.
Corrosion was found on several gusset plates during last week’s in-depth inspection of the bridge. Analysis shows that the corroded condition of three gusset plates warrants repairs. These repairs are similar to past gusset plate fixes. Full inspection results will be available in mid-July.
The repair work may continue into next week. MnDOT anticipates that both lanes will be open over the holiday weekend.
The bridge is scheduled for a full rehabilitation or replacement in 2014 and MnDOT will continue to monitor and repair the bridge until then.
Trucks that weigh more than 40 tons continue to be restricted from crossing the bridge until further notice, including commercial vehicles and agricultural equipment.
MnDOT urges motorists to always drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a roadway that has been blocked with barriers or cones.
