Highway 63 bridge construction postponed until 2011
ROCHESTER, Minn. —The construction date for the Highway 63 bridge replacement in Zumbro Falls has been postponed until the 2011 construction season, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
During a public meeting in January 2010, community members discussed safety concerns regarding the Highway 63/Highway 60 intersection as well as the distance between the sidewalks on both the bridge and the highway.
“We listened to the community concerns and took a closer look at the layout of the Highway 63/Highway 60 intersection and if it was possible to allow more room between the sidewalks and the highway,” said MnDOT Assistant District Engineer Greg Paulson.
MnDOT is currently conducting an intersection analysis to determine what changes should be made to improve the turning movements for semi-trucks. The bridge design is also being revised to address the sidewalks on the bridge and accommodate intersection improvements.
A public meeting will be held when a new design concept has been developed and the intersection analysis is complete.
MnDOT constructs, operates and maintains the state trunk highway system that includes nearly 12,000 miles of roads and 4,781 bridges. This system carries about 58 percent of all travel for the entire 141,000-mile system of state and local roads. Find out more at www.mndot.gov.
