Eastbound Interstate 90 through Austin scheduled to close March 26-29
ROCHESTER, Minn. —All lanes of eastbound Interstate 90 through Austin, from Highway 218 North to Highway 218 South/21st Street, will be closed beginning Friday, March 26, at 7 p.m. through Monday, March 29, at 5 a.m., according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. The closure is needed to ensure motorist safety during the removal of the flyover bridge connecting westbound
I-90 to Oakland Place Northeast.
During this time, motorists traveling on eastbound I-90 will be detoured north on Highway 218 to Highway 30; east to Highway 56; and south to I-90. Motorists are advised that the detour route is approximately 45 miles. This route was selected to ensure that a viable detour route is maintained through the area in the event of a flood. Local traffic may access eastbound I-90 using the ramp at Oakland Place Northeast, which will remain open during the weekend.
To maintain motorist safety during demolition of the flyover bridge, through-traffic on westbound I-90 will be diverted on to the exit ramp at Highway 218 South/21st Street Northeast, across 21st Street Northeast, and back on to westbound I-90 using the entrance ramp at 21st Street Northeast during the weekend. During this time, northbound traffic on Highway 218 South will be prohibited from using the bridge at 21st Street Northeast to cross I-90.Motorists will be detoured east on I-90 to 28th Street Northeast, north to westbound I-90, and west to 21st Street Northeast.
Residents in the area are advised that construction activities, including bridge demolition, will be taking place around-the-clock during the weekend. Noise and vibrations may be associated with these activities.
Motorists are reminded that the exit from westbound I-90 to Oakland Place Northeast (I-90 Business Loop) will close on Monday, March 22, until September. During this time, motorists will be detoured south on Highway 218 to Oakland Avenue East, and west to Oakland Place Northeast.
Lunda Construction is the primary contractor for this $12.8 million-dollar project, which includes four bridge replacements in two years.
