Alexandria interchange reconstruction and Hwy 29 four-lane expansion project

Project Features

The Minnesota Department of Transportation, along with Douglas County and the city of Alexandria, will rebuild the I-94/Hwy 29 interchange and expand Hwy 29 to four lanes south of I-94 in 2015-2016. Work is expected to begin in July of 2015 and continue through the 2016 construction season.

2015 work

  • Four-lane expansion of Hwy 29 from 1/4-mile south of County Hwy 28 to I-94
  • County Hwy 28 realigned to cross Hwy 29 in line with County Road 87
  • Roundabout constructed at Hwy 29 and County Hwy 28/County Road 87

2016 work

  • Remove and replace current I-94/Hwy 29 bridges
  • Rebuild I-94 ramps
  • Access adjustments at 50th Avenue South

Traffic impacts

There are no traffic impacts at this time.

  • Access to local businesses will be maintained throughout the project.
  • Hwy 29 will remain open throughout the project
  • I-94 ramps will close for approximately two weeks in 2016

Why this project is needed

  • Existing and future operation of interchange which is characterized by inadequate spacing between intersections
  • Future operation of Hwy 29 south of I-94 as area continues to grow
  • Traffic congestion along 50th Avenue
