Orange barrels on a highway

Hwy 12 resurfacing project between Benson, Kerkhoven begins July 18

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. – Motorists on Highway 12 between Benson and Kerkhoven will encounter intermittent lane closures when a resurfacing project begins Monday, July 18, weather permitting.

The project also includes sidewalk and pedestrian accessibility work in the communities of Kerkhoven, Murdock and DeGraff.

The highway will remain open to traffic throughout the project.

Flaggers will allow one-way, alternating traffic through the work zone. Drivers must obey the flagger, be prepared to stop and follow the pilot car through the work zone. Motorists entering from driveways or roads that intersect with Highway 12 within a work zone must wait for the pilot car to pass, then follow it through the work zone.

Duininck, Inc. of Prinsburg is the prime contractor for the $5.3 million project. Work is expected to be complete by October.

When work is done, motorists will notice a smoother, safer ride along 16 miles of Highway 12. This project helps ensure MnDOT’s transportation system will continue to serve the state for many years.
