Orange barrels on a highway

DATE CHANGE: Hwy 29 traffic switch, overnight I-94 closures begin April 11 in Alexandria

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. – Beginning next week, motorists in Alexandria will counter a traffic switch on Highway 29 and overnight closures on Interstate 94.

On Monday, April 11, crews will shift all Highway 29 traffic to the west bridge over I-94 with a single lane in each direction.

The traffic shift will remain in place through mid-summer.

Also beginning the evening of April 11, I-94 at Highway 29 will close intermittently overnight between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. The closures will allow crews to remove the existing northbound Highway 29 bridge above the traffic lanes.

Traffic will be diverted onto the Highway 29 exit ramps and immediately back onto the entrance ramps to I-94.

The Minnesota State Patrol will assist with traffic control. Motorists may experience delays.

The closures will occur weeknights for up to five days.

All the work is part of the I-94/Highway 29 interchange reconstruction and bridge replacement project.

Throughout the project, Highway 29 will remain open. However, interstate ramps will close two at a time for two weeks during the summer for reconstruction.

More information about the work is available on the project website: www.mndot.gov/d4/projects/alexi94hwy29.
