I-94 cable median barrier project near Evansville, Barnesville begins May 27
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. – Motorists on Interstate 94 near Evansville and Barnesville will experience intermittent lane and shoulder closures when a cable median barrier installation project begins May 27, weather permitting.
Crews will install the cable barrier along 18 miles of I-94 between the Garfield and Ashby exits and four miles of I-94 near the Barnesville exits.
Work will begin near Evansville. Motorists should prepare to slow down in areas where crews are working.
Work is expected to be complete by late August.
Global Specialty Contractors, Inc. of Eagan is the prime contractor for the $2.3 million project.
Cable median barrier prevents vehicles from crossing medians and hitting oncoming traffic. The relatively low cost of the cable barriers compared to other barrier systems allows the Minnesota Department of Transportation to cover more miles of the state highway system for the same amount of money.
Last year, MnDOT added the cable barriers in the Moorhead, Fergus Falls and Alexandria areas. Since 2004, crews have installed approximately 390 miles of the barrier in Minnesota. It’s estimated the barriers have saved 80 lives.
