Highway 235 becomes Otter Tail County Road 38

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — The ownership of Highway 235 from Parkers Prairie to Urbank will be transferred from the Minnesota Department of Transportation to Otter Tail County on Dec. 2. The road will now be known as Otter Tail County State Aid Highway 38.

Turnback funds totaling an estimated $10.3 million will be provided to Otter Tail County to restore the roadway to an acceptable condition and off-set some additional costs involved with maintaining the road.

Signs along the route are scheduled to be changed in mid-December, but maintenance responsibility will shift on Dec. 2.

Otter Tail County will host a public meeting regarding the transfer at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at the Prairie Event Center, 201 E. Main St., Parkers Prairie.

Highway 235 is one of several 200 series roadways that MnDOT is working to transfer to a proper level of government. Other roadways have been identified in a statewide jurisdictional realignment study. For example, lower volume roadways, which are important at the county level, have a difficult time competing for funds with high volume highways in the state department and vice versa. A county road that is serving as a principal artery of the transportation system may be realigned to a state roadway.
