Sand Lake outlet project along Highway 59 between Detroit Lakes and Pelican Rapids begins April 11

DETROIT LAKES, Minn.—Motorists on Highway 59 between Detroit Lakes and Pelican Rapids may encounter minor delays and shoulder closures when an outlet construction project begins April 11.

Construction work may require shoulder closures. Motorists should watch for trucks and equipment traveling in and around the work zone. During construction crews may temporarily close side road entrances while they construct the outlet beneath approaches and replace existing culverts.

Motorists may encounter crews hauling equipment and materials to the construction site prior to the April 11 start date.

The contractor, Hough Inc., will construct a permanent outlet from Sand Lake to Prairie Lake along the west side of Highway 59. The project includes installation of a pipe, an electric pump station and fish screens. Temporary pumps also will be used during pipe installation to clear the construction area of water.

Construction is scheduled to be completed in mid-May, weather permitting. Pumping of Sand Lake will begin following construction once the area’s spring melt concludes.
