River new bridge will have curved steel girders and overlooks for
pedestrians to stop and look at the river. Full

The new bridge will have 8-foot-wide sidewalks, which will be 3
feet wider than those on the current bridge. There will also be
6-foot shoulders for bike traffic. The bridge will be built with
four lanes, but could expand to six lanes if warranted in the future.
Besides rebuilding Mississippi River bridge in 2009, Highway 23/Division
Street will be reconstructed from Fourth Avenue to Washington Memorial
Drive, including the overpass at Lake George (9th/10th Avenue).
The two bridges are considered community gateways to the heart of
downtown St. Cloud.
In urban projects such as this, seven percent of the bridge budget
is allocated for visual aesthetics. Since St. Cloud is known as
the Granite City; the
community wants it to be used to accent the bridges. Three locally
quarried granites have been chosen to form a brickwork pattern on
the abutments and the inside face of the bottom section of the railing
similar to the Highway 23 bridge in Cold Spring (below right).

On June 2, the St. Cloud City Council voted to paint the Mississippi
River bridge gray. Gray will blend with the granite that will be
used on the bridge. The underside of the bridge will not be painted.
