Construct new, safer access at Benton CR 8

MnDOT will improve the access at Hwy 23 and Benton CR 8 (35th Ave NE) in east St. Cloud with a new Reduced Conflict Intersection design. Layout with aerial background image, PDF

Traffic plans

Crews will reconstruct the intersection in 2020. Motorists can plan for:

  • Access to/from Benton CR 8 will close and detour along local roads.
  • Hwy 23 will have single lane or shoulder closures

What are RCIs

Reduced Conflict Intersections (RCIs) are intersections that decrease fatalities and injuries caused by broadside crashes on four-lane divided highways. RCIs can also be known as J-Turns or RCUTs.

Benefits of RCIs

  • Improved safety—Studies show a 70 percent reduction in fatalities and a 42 percent reduction in injury crashes where RCIs are used
  • Faster to build—RCIs can be designed and built in approximately one year. Interchanges typically take 3-5 years
  • Lower cost—RCIs are often less expensive than constructing an intersection with a stop light and are a fraction the cost of building an interchange
