New Highway 24 Clearwater bridge location decided
Public invited to open house in Clearwater
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – A new bridge to replace the existing Highway 24 bridge spanning the Mississippi River in Clearwater will be constructed just east, or downstream, of the existing bridge.
Those interested in the new bridge location, plans and timeline are invited to an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 8 at Clearwater City Hall, 605 County Road 75.
Information about the project, including the preliminary layout, will be on display. MnDOT project leaders also will be on hand to answer questions.
MnDOT staff originally proposed new bridge options for both the east and west sides of the existing bridge. Potential issues such as residential relocations, impacts to city utilities, local road connections, a DNR boat landing and construction staging were considered before making the final location determination. It was found that the east-side option affects the fewest properties.
Construction of the new bridge is expected to start in July 2015, with completion in fall 2016. The existing Hwy 24 bridge will remain open to traffic while the new bridge is constructed. After the new bridge opens to traffic, the existing Hwy 24 bridge will be closed and dismantled.
