Highway 23 Project Update

Week of March 26 - April 1

Highway 23 mainline from Washington Memorial Drive to 4th Avenue

On Thursday, March 26, traffic will be switched from one lane in each direction on the outside lanes of Highway 23 to the eastbound lanes of Highway 23 resulting in one lane in each direction.

On/off ramps at 9th Avenue South will be closed to traffic.

Weather permitting, Lake George bridge beam encapsulation is scheduled for Saturday March 28th, during daylight hours. The spraying operation will be accomplished using single lane closures, allowing for traffic to continue through the work zone during the procedure. Back-up day in case of inclement weather is Sunday, March 29.

Weather permitting, Lake George bridge demolition will begin on Monday, March 30 for approximately 5 days. Bridge demolition and beam setting will be done at night, between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. The city of St. Cloud has waived noise ordinances in order to complete this work.

9th Avenue South under bridge will be closed to traffic during night work. Motorists should follow signed detour.

Crews are working on removals, temporary signal installation, erosion control implementation and bridge demolition preparation.

Placement of business signage has begun.



Mississippi River Bridge

The contractor is currently removing the old west abutment and old pier on the west bank in preparation of the new west abutment and trail reconstruction under the bridge on the west side of the river.

Motorists should watch for trucks hauling material away from the bridge on the west entrance over the next two weeks.

New pier #1 is complete. The cofferdam sheeting and forms have been removed.

New pier #2 arches and caps are being formed. Concrete will be poured in the next two or three weeks; weather permitting.

New Pier #3 on the east bank is complete.

Work will continue on the east abutment wing walls for the next two weeks.

Beams are scheduled for early May, Crews will begin erecting beams from the east side of river.

Crews are conducting roadway repair on the Highway 23 detour at the intersection of Highway 23 and 4th Avenue and at St. Germain Street.

Boat traffic will be maintained on the Mississippi River during this project.
