Warning flashers erected on northbound Highway 169
at Mille Lacs County Highway 11

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Motorists traveling on northbound Highway 169, north of Milaca, beginning Wednesday, Sept. 24, will encounter a new active warning flasher system prior to approaching Mille Lacs County Highway 11, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said.

The safety improvement was prompted by the reoccurring right-angle crashes at the intersection, says Tom Dumont, MnDOT district traffic engineer. The warning signs read “CAUTION CROSSING TRAFFIC WHEN FLASHING” and will flash yellow when Mille Lacs County Highway 11 traffic is approaching or is in the crossover median.

MnDOT and Mille Lacs County have been working together to resolve this safety issue. In addition to the warning flasher system, other safety measures include:

  • Installing larger signs
  • Adding two stop signs with stop-line pavement markings in the median crossover
  • Installing intersection warning flashers on Mille Lacs County Highway 11
  • Re-painting all pavement markings
  • Increasing the median mowing schedule

The new warning flasher system costs approximately $25,000.

“Safety is MnDOT’s top priority and we will continue to monitor the intersection and make additional improvements if necessary,” Dumont said.

Drivers are urged to continue to be alert and drive with caution when approaching the intersection. For updated statewide traffic, construction, weather and travel information, visit www.511mn.org.
