Four-lane expansion of Highway 55 in Buffalo

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Construction continues on a Highway 55 four-lane expansion project from east of Wright County Highway 34 to Wright County Highway 134.

Safety improvements include:

  • Traffic signal system installation with added turn lanes at the intersection of Highway 55 and Wright County Highway 134
  • Four lanes of newly paved roadway
  • City sidewalks, curb and gutters, storm sewers and utility relocations

During construction, Highway 55 will remain open to two-way traffic with periodic traffic lane shifts. In late October, traffic was shifted onto the newly completed westbound lanes to allow crews to construct the eastbound lanes. Drivers are urged to slow down and drive with care through the work zone.

The $2.8 million expansion project was jointly funded by the Highway 55 Corridor Coalition, the city of Buffalo and the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Mathiowetz Construction of Sleepy Eye is the prime contractor, with the city of Buffalo serving as project supervisors.

Work on the project will continue until winter weather suspends operations. In the spring, crews will resume work and complete the the project by June 2009.
