Project Update

With the Fourth of July holiday in our rearview mirror, motorists will see some changes to the area’s construction projects. Work on the Highway 2 Bypass will transition from the stage 1 detour to stage 2 beginning tomorrow (July 7) when crews remove the detour on the Hwy 71 southbound bridge.

The Hwy 197/Bemidji Ave resurfacing project is scheduled to kick off on Monday, July 10. Residents and business owners are invited to take part in today’s open house from 3 - 5 p.m. at the Tourist Information Center.

Upcoming Schedule

Hwy 2- Bypass

  • Friday, July 7- Stage 1 detour removed from the Hwy 71 southbound bridge.
  • Friday, July 7- Begin stage 2 detour of the westbound Hwy 2 bridge near the airport. Motorists will use the Hwy 71 exit to Paul Bunyan drive and turn west at the light to access Hwy 2.
  • Traffic control switch on the Hwy 2 lane crossovers.

Hwy 197/Bemidji Ave- Downtown (Begins July 10)

  • Thursday, July 6- Open house from 3-5 p.m. at the Tourist Information Building.
  • Monday, July 10- Construction begins.
  • Crews will begin with the outside lane (lakeside) of the northbound lanes. When complete, work will shift to the inside lane.
  • Only 1 of the 4 lanes will be closed at any one time.
  • Motorists can expect traffic backups during peak travel times.
  • The City of Bemidji recently approved the installation of a signalized crosswalk across the northbound lanes. It will be located near the Dairy Queen at Cross St SW.

Hwy 2- Bypass

  • Schedule: May 15 - Sept
  • Resurface between Moberg Drive and 1/2 mile west of Hubbard County Line (Airport to Animal Land)
  • Repair bridges

Hwy 197- Downtown

  • Schedule: July 10 - Sept
  • Resurface between 3rd St NW to 7th St SE (Paul and Babe to Lueken's South)
  • Sidewalk, crosswalk and pedestrian access improvements
  • Storm sewer replacement

Traffic impacts

Hwy 2- Bypass

  • Alternating detour for the bridges on the north side of the bypass
    • Hwy 71 southbound bridge connection to the bypass (near Menard's)
      • Detour south on Highway 197 through Bemidji
    • Hwy 2 northbound bridge connection to westbound Highway 2 (near airport)
      • Detour onto Hwy 71 exit, then west onto Highway 2
  • Lane closures

  • Lane closures- (project will begin with the lakeside lanes)
