Orange barrels on a highway

Thirty mile detour on Hwy 46 begins July 11

Project to replace culvert for the Popple River, located three miles south of Alvwood

BEMIDJI, Minn. – Motorists on Highway 46 should plan for additional travel time when a detour begins July 6 as crews replace a box culvert at the southern crossing of the Popple River, located three miles south of Alvwood.

Because of the rivers and lakes in the area, the detour will add 30 miles to the route. It goes through Spring Lake on Itasca County Road 29 and County Road 4.

To lessen the impact of this detour, construction staff has accelerated the project timeline and it is expected to last until late August, weather permitting.

Gladen Construction Inc. is the contractor for the $852,000 project. The work will ensure a smoother and safer roadway with better drainage for motorists in the region.

MnDOT urges motorists to follow these recommendations in work zones: stay alert; watch for signs, equipment and workers; minimize distractions, such as using cell phones, eating or drinking; avoid tailgating; follow posted speed limits and directional signs; and stay in one lane while driving through the work zone.
