Contaminated soil excavation nears completion on Hwy 59 at Plummer
Detour expected to be removed within a week
BEMIDJI, Minn. –The excavation and removal of contaminated soil on Hwy 59 at Plummer is nearing completion, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
MnDOT anticipates that the highway will be open early next week at the latest.
The highway has been closed with a detour in place since March 31, when a semi-trailer carrying fuel collided with a train at a railroad crossing on the highway.
During the soil testing process, workers discovered that some of the spilled product had seeped deep into soils under the roadbed, requiring additional soil removal, treatment and disposal. When this process is complete, material to backfill and repair the roadbed will be hauled in; MnDOT will then resurface the highway.
Until the work is complete, motorists are advised to continue to use the posted detour until the highway is officially open. Driving around barricades is illegal and creates dangerous situations for drivers as well as workers in the area.
MnDOT would like to thank the motorists who use this section of Hwy 59 for their patience while the road has been closed. For updated information, call 511 or visit www.511mn.org.
