Detour starts July 6 on Hwy 71 south of Bemidji
Motorists cautioned to slow down for construction
A detour from Highway 71 south of Bemidji is scheduled to go into effect on Tuesday, July 6, as crews continue their work on the reconstruction and expansion of Highway 197 and U.S. Highway 71 from 7th Street Southeast in Bemidji to Hubbard County Road 9.
The detour route will direct southbound traffic from Highway 71, west on to Beltrami County Road 2/North Plantagenet Drive, then south on Hubbard County Road 98, and east on Hubbard County Road 9/South Plantagenet Drive back to Highway 71. Northbound traffic will follow the same detour in reverse.
Included in the project is construction of a new bridge over U.S. Highway 2. Preparations to begin building the substructure for the bridge will also start July 6.
When completed this roadway will accommodate increased traffic volumes and provide safer turning opportunities.
Motorists are reminded to be alert to lane restrictions, slowing and turning traffic, equipment and workers and to watch for the detour signs from Highway 71.
Access to residences and businesses in the construction zone will be maintained.
