Public meeting planned to discuss growth and congestion on Hwy. 197 in Bemidji
BEMIDJI, Minn. - A public meeting to discuss roadway congestion and safety concerns on State Highway 197 in Bemidji will be held on Thursday, February 28, from 5 - 7 p.m. at the district headquarters of the Minnesota Department of Transportation located at 3920 Highway 2 West. The meeting will be in an open-house style format so that interested individuals can stop in anytime between the specified hours.
This meeting is being held in response to growing congestion, safety concerns and changing land patterns. Mn/DOT and the city of Bemidji are conducting an access management assessment of the Hwy. 197 corridor and invite the public to review alternatives and provide input. Business and landowners along the corridor are especially encouraged to attend.
The goal of the access management study is to develop a corridor plan that preserves and enhances mobility and safety, while providing reasonable and viable access in addition to considerations for the environment and adjacent land uses. The preferred corridor plan will provide Mn/DOT and the city of Bemidji with a long-range vision that can be utilized for planning as redevelopment occurs.
Access management is necessary to ensure the safety and mobility of the statewide traveling public while accommodating the access and accessibility needs of local communities. The aspects of access management include planning, design, land use, control of traffic flow, and spacing of public street intersections and private access to the public roadway system.
