Traffic impacts

Motorists should expect congestion and traffic back-ups. Please allow extra time or take an alternate route to avoid delays.

Nov. 9 update

The project was expected to be completed in late-October however there have been delays on some of the construction activities and work will now extend into mid- to late-November. MnDOT apologizes for this inconvenience.

Work remaining
  • Sidewalk panels will be placed, one at 1st Street near Bethel and one near West 3rd Street.
  • Pavement markings will be installed on Central Entrance and Mesaba Avenue. If conditions allow, the permanent epoxy will be placed, if not, temporary paint will be placed and redone in the spring.
  • Signal systems will be adjusted and timed.
  • Signs will be installed.
  • Painting of the Superior Street bridge/ramp to southbound I-35 will be completed by Monday, Nov. 11. Then the enclosure will be removed and the site will be cleaned.
    The ramp from Mesaba Avenue to southbound I-35 will close Tuesday, November 13 from 7 p.m. until approximately midnight to clean-up along on the ramp. The detour will be West Superior Street to West Michigan Street, to 27th Avenue West.
  • Pipe railings along several areas of sidewalk will be installed, this work is expected to be completed in late-November.
  • Final work on the pier columns of the Superior Street bridge/ramp to southbound I-35 will be completed at a date yet to be determined.

2019

Some work on the Mesaba Avenue project will continue into 2019 including steel painting at one of the Bong Bridge ramps.

Traveling northbound on West Michigan Street, follow the “Mesaba Ave. Superior St Detour” signs to get to West Superior Street. Travel southbound on West Superior Street until turning onto Garfield Avenue. Travel southbound on Garfield Avenue until turning onto West Railroad Street. Travel northbound on Railroad Street until turning onto South Fifth Avenue West. Travel northbound on Fifth Avenue West until turning onto West Michigan Street. Travel eastbound on Michigan Street until turning onto Third Avenue West.

Superior Street

Proposed detour begins July 9 (PDF)

  • Traveling northbound on West Michigan Street, follow the “Mesaba Ave. Superior St Detour” signs to get to West Superior Street. Travel southbound on West Superior Street until turning onto Garfield Avenue. Travel southbound on Garfield Avenue until turning onto West Railroad Street. Travel northbound on Railroad Street until turning onto South Fifth Avenue West. Travel northbound on Fifth Avenue West until turning onto West Michigan Street. Travel eastbound on Michigan Street until turning onto Third Avenue West.
    • Detour to Superior Street:
      • Travel northbound on Third Avenue West until turning onto Superior Street.
    • Detour to Mesaba Avenue:
      • Travel northbound on Third Avenue West until turning onto West First Street. Depending on the staging, traffic will either follow West First Street or North Fourth Avenue West to get to Mesaba Avenue. 
        • (1): Following the “Mesaba Ave Detour” signs, continue traveling westbound on First Street until reaching Mesaba Avenue.
        • (2): Following the “Mesaba Ave Detour” signs, continue traveling westbound on First Street until reaching North Fourth Avenue West. Travel northbound on Fourth Avenue West until reaching Mesaba Avenue.

The city of Duluth is reconstructing Superior Street, which is adjacent to the Highway 194 Mesaba Avenue project. Superior Street is closed and under construction between Mesaba Avenue and Third Avenue West. The detour for the Superior Street project will utilize Mesaba Avenue up to Second Street. Detailed information about this project can be found on the City of Duluth website.

South Street ADA Improvements - Traffic Impacts

Minor work to achieve ADA compliance from South Street to the pedestrian bridge over I-35 located between 16th and 17th Avenue East will be done. This ADA improvement work will require a short duration detour of South Street.
