• Original cost for the rehabilitation project $1,924,078
  
• The updated cost, which includes flood-related repairs and the new bridge, appears to be approximately $2.75 million. All invoices have not been submitted or approved, the final cost is still being determined.

 

Traffic impacts

Although the Hwy 210 bridge reopened last December, there is about a month of finishing work left to be done.

 

The finishing work, which includes concrete surface finishing, placement of an epoxy chip seal on the bridge deck and painting, began on Monday, May 13. The work is expected to be completed by June 14.

• A temporary signal system is in place that restricts traffic to a single-lane on the bridge. Motorists are required to obey the signals and take turns crossing. The single-lane traffic configuration will remain in place until the project is finished in mid-June.

The project included

• Structural steel repairs or reconstruction
• Gusset plate replacement or reconstruction
• Replacement of riveted connections with bolted connections
• New expansion joints
• New concrete bridge deck and rail
• Concrete repairs/patching on the bridge abutment and wingwalls
• Bridge painting
• New concrete approach panels

Benefits

Planned work should provide a 50-year life extension for the bridge.

Thomson bridge facts

• The bridge is located on Hwy 210 between Carlton and Thomson over the St. Louis River.
• The bridge, officially known as Bridge 09001, was built in 1961.
• The bridge is 223-feet long and 35-feet wide.
• Two utilities lines are attached to the underside of the bridge; the city of Thomson water line and WLSSD sanitary line.
• The traffic volume on Hwy 210 is about 1350 vehicles per day.
  
  

Flood-damage update

• Repairs to the pavement approaching the bridge was completed as part of the existing contract that was in place for the scheduled bridge rehabilitation that began in June.
  
• A small bridge, just south of the existing bridge was constructed to replace the overflow pipe that was damaged by the record flooding that occurred June 19/20. The new bridge also opened December 12. The new bridge reduces the chance of future damage during periods of high water levels.
