I-535/Blatnik Bridge traffic switch scheduled for Sept. 14 in Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. — A traffic switch will take place on the Blatnik Bridge Wednesday, Sept. 14. The southbound lanes will reopen and both northbound lanes will close for approximately four weeks. One southbound lane will be open the entire length of the bridge and the other southbound lane will be open along the entire stretch of the bridge except on the center span.

The center span area must be closed to meet the restricted weight limits for the repair work taking place on the bridge. This single-lane area will cause traffic backups. Motorists may wish to use the Bong Bridge as an alternate route to Superior.

Once this traffic switch is in place, motorists traveling to Duluth from Superior will be required to take a marked detour and use the Bong Bridge.

Motorists are advised that traffic is expected to be slow on I-35 in downtown Duluth for most of the day Wed., Sept. 14 as crews remove signs that are no longer needed and set up the signs needed for the traffic switch. There will be many temporary lane closures throughout the day and MnDOT suggests allowing extra time for travel through this area.

Southbound Garfield Avenue is closed at Nelson Street (near the Goodwill store) and will remain closed until about Sept. 10.

All businesses in the Port Terminal area are accessible by using Helberg Drive. The detour route is signed.

The Garfield Avenue closure is needed to remove and replace the concrete pavement on Garfield Avenue. Northbound Garfield Avenue traffic coming from the Port Terminal is not affected by this closure and motorists can travel north out of the port on Garfield Avenue.

This work is being done as part of the I-535 Blatnik Bridge repair project.

Motorists are asked to be patient and drive carefully near the work zone areas.
