Southbound Garfield Avenue to close for two weeks beginning Aug. 29 in Duluth
Northbound Garfield Avenue traffic will not be affected
DULUTH, Minn. — Southbound Garfield Avenue will close at Nelson Street (near the Goodwill store) Monday, August 29. It will remain closed until about September 10.
All businesses in the Port Terminal area will be accessible by using Helberg Drive. The detour route will be signed.
The closure is needed to remove and replace the concrete pavement on Garfield Avenue. Northbound Garfield Avenue traffic coming from the Port Terminal will not be affected by this closure and will be able to travel north out of the port on Garfield Avenue.
This work is being done as part of the I-535 Blatnik Bridge repair project.
Blatnik Bridge lane closures
Two southbound lanes and one northbound lane are currently closed on the Blatnik Bridge. The northbound lane will reopen this weekend and next weekend to help alleviate congestion during the Labor Day holiday period. The southbound lanes cannot be reopened due to safety issues, the complexity and time required to take down the traffic control, which includes signs, barrels, barricades, cones and portable message boards and because reopening lanes is not possible due to the current status of the construction project.
Motorists are asked to be patient as back-ups are likely.
