Orange barrels on a highway

Cable median barrier project begins May 12 on I-35 in Pine County

DULUTH, Minn. – Motorists may encounter lane restrictions on I-35 beginning Monday, May 12, as a cable median barrier project begins just south of Rock Creek in Pine County.

The work will take place in the freeway median, however the left lane will be closed daily near work sites to allow for movement of equipment and workers. The right lane will remain open.

The single lane sections will range from one to three miles in length. All lanes will reopen at night and at noon Fridays in the northbound direction. No work will be done over weekends.

Thirty-four sections of cable median barrier (112,382 feet) will be installed as part of this project. The installation areas and lane closures will move northward from Rock Creek to just south of Carlton. The project is scheduled to be completed in late-June.

The speed limit will be 55 mph in the single lane sections.

Cable median barriers can reduce fatal crashes by 90 percent. There is no other safety device available that virtually guarantees consistent success in saving lives every year on the interstate system.
