DULUTH, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation will close southbound Interstate 35 between Lake Avenue and 21st Avenue West in Duluth tonight. The closure is expected to last several days.

A posted detour for southbound I-35 through-traffic is in affect and follows London Road, 12th Avenue East, 3rd Street, Mesaba Avenue, Michigan Street, 21st Avenue West to southbound I-35.

A posted detour for eastbound Mesaba Avenue (Highway 194) is in affect and follows Michigan Street, 21st Avenue West to southbound I-35.

Local traffic may use I-35 between 26th Avenue East and Lake Avenue. All southbound traffic must exit at the common exit to Lake Avenue and 5th Avenue West.

Bridge inspectors identified deteriorated piling that needs to be repaired before the southbound lanes can be reopened. MnDOT will begin the repair with its maintenance crew before a contractor is hired to complete the work.

“The bridge is being closed as a precautionary measure due to the amount of deterioration that was identified during a recent inspection,” said Duane Hill, MnDOT District 1 engineer.

Motorists are encouraged to be patient during their morning commute. The southbound closure will cause traffic delays at the closure and at locations along the detour route. These delays should ease over the next few days as commuters adjust to the changes.
