Construction activities continue on Hwy 53 north of Virginia
Motorists may encounter temporary lane closures beginning Feb. 4
DULUTH, Minn. – Motorists traveling on Hwy 53 between Cook and County Road 652 (Goodell Road) may encounter temporary lane restrictions beginning the week of February 4 as blasting and grading work begins on the four-lane expansion project.
Traffic impacts may include:
- Intermittent, temporary lane and shoulder closures controlled by flaggers
- Reduced speeds in work zones
- Stopped traffic during rock blasting
The first stage of this four-lane expansion project between Virginia and Cook was completed in 2006. The second stage was completed in 2009. This third and final stage will be completed in summer 2014. When completed, approximately 20 miles of Hwy 53 will be expanded to four-lanes.
