Hwy 169 lane restrictions end Aug. 27 in Grand Rapids

DULUTH, Minn. — All lanes on Hwy 169 in Grand Rapids are expected to reopen by late-Monday, Aug. 27, weather permitting.

Traffic had been restricted to a single lane in each direction since April. Minor work requiring temporary lane closures will continue until October.

“The success of the project is attributable to Hammerlund Construction, Inc. crews working long hours and our relatively good weather this summer,” said Kevin Rohling, MnDOT District 1 project engineer. “The public has been very patient and supportive and that also contributed to the project’s success.”

Work will resume next June when temporary pavement markings will be replaced with permanent markings. The project is scheduled to be completed by June 30.

This project completely reconstructed Hwy 169 from 3rd Street N to 13th Street S and added a new center-turn-lane to separate through-traffic from turning-traffic. This safety improvement is designed to reduce rear-end collisions and improve traffic flow.
