Hwy 53 construction project in Cotton begins May 21
DULUTH, Minn. — Motorists traveling on Hwy 53 in Cotton will encounter lane closures and intermittent flagging closures May 21 through late August. The traffic impacts are necessary while crews work on a Hwy 53 safety and preservation project.
The project is scheduled to be completed in late August 2012.
Access to all Cotton businesses will be maintained during and after construction.
Safety benefits
- A reduced conflict intersection will be built to improve safety and reduce crashes.
- The Paleface River Bridge will be re-decked and coated with epoxy chip seal to provide better skid resistance. This is the first bridge in Minnesota to be built using precast deck panels. Using precast deck panels instead of traditional cast-in-place construction will reduce construction time for the new bridge by several weeks.
- Four miles of Hwy 53 will be resurfaced providing a smoother and safer road designed to last several years.
