Detour begins May 14 on Hwy 1 south of Ely
DULUTH, Minn. — Motorists will encounter a detour on Hwy 1 south of Ely beginning Monday, May 14. The detour will be in place until mid-August 2012. The detour route will be regularly graded and maintained.
The duration of the detour is longer than originally planned because much more rock than expected was encountered during work this winter. This additional rock has eliminated the option of any vehicular travel through the project area.
Motorists will be required to follow the posted detour. The only vehicles allowed into the closed area are authorized construction vehicles. The roadway in the closed area is impassible due to drop offs, marshy areas and large rocky obstructions.
Hwy 1 will be closed between Forest Road 424/New Tomahawk Road and just north of Forest Road 553 (see attached map).
Five miles of Hwy 1 will be reconstructed, including adding new bituminous surfacing and improving drainage. The project is expected to be completed by November 2012.
The new project design reduces the severity of bumps and dips in the road, softens existing tight curves, adds paved shoulders and reduces the number of hazardous roadside obstacles.
The finished highway will be smoother, safer and will retain the unique, picturesque character of Hwy 1.
