Hwy 65 and Hwy 1 in Itasca County reopened

MnDOT crews repaired extensive road damage from flooding

DULUTH, Minn. — Hwy 65 from Nashwaulk to Togo and Hwy 1 between Hwy 73 and Hwy 65 are open after MnDOT crews made extensive repairs to damage caused by a flash flood on Monday.

Repairs to eroded shoulders, inslopes and pavement were made on Hwy 65 and shoulder, culvert and pavement repairs were made on Hwy 1. Approximately 200 truckloads of fill was required to repair the washed-out culvert on Hwy 1.

“We worked round-the-clock to get the damage repaired,” said Duane Hill, MnDOT maintenance engineer. “Our goal was to repair and reopen the road as quickly as possible. With the possibility of a shutdown it was even more important than usual to get the road open quickly because if a shutdown occurs, we will have an extremely limited staff for this kind of emergency work.”

MnDOT was able to reopen the roads at 10 p.m., Tuesday night.
