Mn/DOT reminds citizens to not put snow on public roadways

DULUTH, Minn ----- Citizens are reminded that it is unlawful to deposit snow on or next to any public highway or street.

Minnesota law, and many local ordinances, prohibit the plowing, blowing, shoveling or otherwise placing of snow onto public roadways.  Violations are considered misdemeanor violations which can carry varied degrees of legal consequences.

Civil penalties may also apply if the placement of snow creates a hazard, such as a slippery area, frozen rut or bump that contributes to a motor vehicle or pedestrian mishap.  The civil lawsuits, which include costly court proceedings, can be extensive and extend to both the property owner and the person who actually placed the snow on the public roadway.

Other hazards caused by improper snow storage can include drainage problems, drifting, sight obstructions and safe pedestrian accessibility.  Matters such as these can also result in civil litigation and other legal penalties.
