Minnesotans want quality projects delivered faster with shorter construction times and minimal maintenance that will affect traffic.  MnDOT has initiated several innovative contracting techniques to accomplish this:

• Design-build projects overlap design and construction activities, thereby saving time
• A + B bidding and incentives reduce construction time traffic delays
• Lane rental minimizes traffic impacts during construction
• Warranties and pay for performance specifications improve quality

Safety

• Motorist and worker safety is a top priority for MnDOT
• Annually, there 600 deaths from crashes
• Road rage due to congestion or work zones is a growing concern

Design-build can improve safety by fast-tracking safety improvement projects.  Other innovative contracting methods can reduce the time that workers and motorists spend in work  zones.

Cost

• Construction and land acquisition costs increase each year.
• Congestion results in lost time and wages.  Twin Cities drivers average 34 hours per year stuck in traffic.
