About the project
The I-35E Cayuga Project is named after the Cayuga Bridge, which carries traffic over Cayuga Street and the BNSF Railroad. It is located on I-35E between University Avenue and Maryland Avenue in St. Paul.
The project includes replacement of the Cayuga Street bridge, Pennsylvania Avenue bridge and railroad bridges along I-35E. A major change within the area will be the replacement of the existing Pennsylvania Avenue/I-35E interchange with a new interchange at Cayuga Street. This will help correct existing safety and operational issues and provide better freeway access for St. Paul’s Phalen Boulevard corridor.
The project also includes reconstruction of I-35E along a new alignment between Maryland Avenue and University Avenue. The new roadway will have an auxiliary lane added in each direction for additional capacity and improved roadway geometry.
A separate project will reconstruct the Maryland Avenue bridge, which will include some work on the interchange.
- Increase highway capacity by constructing additional traffic lanes in each direction
- Provide better interchange spacing between Maryland and University Avenues by shifting the interchange from Pennsylvania Avenue to Cayuga Street
- Improve access for St. Paul’s Phalen Boulevard
