About the project

Verticle image

The section of Hwy 1 on the national Forest Highway system is scheduled for reconstruction using 80 percent federal Forest Highway funds. The three-phase construction will consist of road realignment, minor shoulder widening and context sensitive design.

  • Phase1 reconstructed the highway between US Forest Route 424 and Lake County Hwy 2 and the Stony and Kawishiwi River bridges. The project’s context sensitive solution approach resulted in a 2010 FHWA Award of Excellence for Highway Design.
  • The current Phase 2 project reconstructs five miles between US Forest Route 553 and US Forest Route 424. The project includes realignment and drainage improvements.
  • Phase 3 is an overlay to improve pavement condition from the Kawishiwi River Bridge to US Forest Route 553.

Project Benefits

The project will provide a smooth driving surface, add paved shoulders and build safer curves, for increased safety and mobility.
