About the project
This section of Hwy 1 on the National Forest Highway system is scheduled for reconstruction using 80 percent federal forest highway funds. The three-phase construction will consist of road realignment, minor shoulder widening and context sensitive design.
- Phase1 reconstructed the highway between US Forest Route 424 and Lake County Hwy 2 and the Stony and Kawishiwi River bridges. The project’s context sensitive solution approach resulted in a 2010 FHWA Award of Excellence for Highway Design.
- Phase 2 reconstructed five miles between US Forest Route 553 and US Forest Route 424. The project included realignment and drainage improvements.
- Phase 3 (Scheduled for 2015) is an overlay project to improve pavement condition from the Kawishiwi River Bridge to US Forest Route 553.
The project will provide a smooth driving surface, add paved shoulders and build safer curves for increased safety and mobility.
