Small business development classes and networking

Small business development classes

A series of classes designed for the new and experienced small business owner and their staff, including professional/technical and contractor businesses. Learn to leverage your skills, increase your business capacity, position yourself to compete for MnDOT contracts and projects, and how to manage a successful project. Classes, which are interactive and activity based, are offered February through April online or at a physical location as needed. Expert instructors who have built or worked in a small business themselves will share their knowledge and resources in each session. Additional opportunities for one-on-one instruction and mentoring are available.

Class subjects include:

  • Marketing your business and getting work
  • Basic business and communication skills
  • Drafting a business capability statement
  • Designing a business portfolio and website
  • Using social media to reach clients
  • Finding capital or funding
  • Responding to a Request for Proposal (RFP)
  • Running a business
  • Managing a crisis
  • Expanding your team
  • Overhead rate and audit processes
  • Working with MnDOT once a project is secured
