I-35W MnPASS Express Lane Extension in Burnsville
Project Update
- Installation of overhead signs will occur December 2011 – February 2012
- Mn/PASS extension will be fully operational in the Spring of 2012
Benefits of the completed project
- Added a lane of capacity to northbound I-35W between Southcross Drive near the I-35W/I-35E split and Burnsville Parkway
- Extended the existing MnPASS lane and Smart Lanes on northbound I-35W two miles farther south
- Created a continuous MnPASS/Smart Lanes system on northbound I-35W from Southcross Drive near the I-35W/I-35E split in Burnsville to downtown Minneapolis
- Created a system of bus lanes and shoulders to enable improved transit service in the south Metro Area
- Resurfaced northbound I-35W between Southcross Drive and Burnsville Parkway
- Resurfaced southbound I-35W between Highway 13 and Southcross Drive
- Constructed noise walls
- Reduce congestion, increase travel reliability and improve safety while providing more transportation choices
About MnPASS Express Lanes
MnPASS Express lanes offer solo drivers a congestion-free choice by paying a toll to use the High Occupancy Vehicle/carpool lane. Carpools with two or more occupants, motorcycles and transit buses can use the Express Lanes free of charge. See the video.
MnPASS operates on
- I-394 between the western suburbs and downtown Minneapolis
- I-35W between Hwy 13 in Burnsville and I-494 in Bloomington (opened Sept. 30)
- I-35W between 42nd St. in Minneapolis and Highway 65. (opened Sept. 30)
Residents in the South Metro will see improved traffic flow and reduced congestion and commute times through the I-35W corridor. Drivers that use the MnPASS Express Lane will experience a safer, faster and more reliable commute.
