Eight Basic Rules of the Road

Use a light logo

It is important for bicyclists to bike safely.  Bicyclists are required to follow the same road rules as motorists.

Proper helmet fit
Proper helmet fit

1. Always wear a helmet.  A properly worn helmet is your best protection against injury.  Your bicycle helmet should fit properly and be worn the correct way.  For more information on fitting a helmet, go to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute or State Bicycle Advisory Committee website.   To purchase helmets go to the Minnesota Safety Council

.Signaling a Right Turn

Signaling a Right Turn

2. Use hand signals when you are turning or stopping.  Look over your left shoulder for traffic before you make a move. This also signals motorists.  For turns, work your way into the proper lane 150 feet early; if you can’t get in by 40 to 50 feet before the turn, go straight and double back.  When turning right, do not cut off another bicyclist.   See Share the Road for more information.
