Application of Theme
The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) was established in 1905 to promote air sports. Since that time,
many new categories of air sports have been added to the list of competitions as they were developed around the world.
Currently there are eleven categories of air sports competitions:
- Aerobatics
- Gliding
Aeromodelling - Hang Gliding & Paragliding
Amateur Built & Experimental Aircraft
Astronautic Records - Microlight & Paramotor
Ballooning - Parachuting
General Aviation - Rotorcraft
Research each of the Air Sports listed above and pick the one you would most like to try out. Which Air Sport will you choose?
across the sky in an aerobatic plane. Perhaps you would enjoy building a model plane or even a real one! Would you like to
pilot a balloon, a plane, a helicopter, a glider, or even a space ship? Where will they take you? What would you see? Imagine
launching off the side of a hill or mountain, suspended below a hang glider or paraglider, and silently glide to earth. If you’d rather
or paramotor! Maybe you’ll choose to step out of an aircraft, into thin air, and drift down to the ground under a parachute!
Think about where you would do “Your Favorite Air Sport.” What will your air or space craft look like? Before you decide, imagine
all of the possibilities then pick up your favorite colored pens, pencils, or paint and create a poster of “Your Favorite Air Sport!”
Please also legibly print the artist’s name on the back of the artwork in case the Certificate becomes detached from the art work.
Eligibility
All children (entrants) must be residents of Minnesota between the ages 6-17 as determined by their age on December 31, 2012.
All children in the age groups shown below are encouraged to participate in the contest, even if they are related to officials or employees of the FAI or any of its member organizations.
Age Categories
Entries are judged in three classes:
Group I – Junior Category
(Date of birth between 1 January 2003 and 31 December 2006) or Ages 6-9
Group II – Intermediate Category
(Date of birth between 1 January 1999 and 31 December 2002) or Ages 10-13
Group II – Senior Category
(Date of birth between 1 January 1995 and 31 December 1998) or Ages 14-17
Awards
Entries in each age category will be judged and the top four will be selected. Winners will receive a certificate and recognition at a ceremony at the Minnesota State Capitol. Additional awards include a certificate for a Discovery Flight and a gift certificate for art materials.
Format
The required format is landscape view on 11 x 17 inches. Artwork must NOT be framed or outlined with borders.
Medium
All student entrant artwork must be designed, and produced by hand (or, incase of physically challenged children, by foot or mouth).
Any of the following media ARE permitted:
Watercolor, acrylic, oil paint, indelible marker pens, felt-tip pens, soft ball-point pens, indelible ink, "crayola" type crayons, or any similar indelible medium
The following media are NOT permitted:
Pencil, charcoal or anything that may smudge or smear, non-permanent medium, computer-generated artwork, or collage work involving the use of photocopies.
Markings
The following information should be clearly shown on the back of the art:
The Certificate of Authenticity (attached to the entry form above) MUST be completely filled out, (title, family name, given name, address, date of birth, country of residence, name and address of school which child attends)signed, and securely fastened (by tape or glue stick) to the back of the student's artwork.
Reproduction Rights
Once received, entries become (and remain) the property of State Sponsor (Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT ) Aeronautics) and may be used for a variety of purposes. The artwork of the top four winners in each age category will be featured in the MnDOT Aviation Art Contest Calendar. Those forwarded for international judging become (and remain) the property of the Federation Aeronautique Internationale.
Judging
Artwork is judged in part for its appropriate portrayal of that year's theme in relation to the aviation world. Other judging criteria include creativity, presentation, and technical ability. Judging committees are made up of art, education, and aviation professionals.
