What is General Aviation?

General Aviation (GA) is defined as ALL aviation other than scheduled commercial airlines and military aviation.

General Aviation includes:

• Air Cargo
• Business – Maintenance Repair and Overhaul Facilities, Repair Stations, flight and maintenance departments, flight schools, fixed base operators
• Aerial Application (agricultural spraying)
• Air Ambulance & Medical Transportation
• Aircraft Manufacturing

General Aviation has become one of our nation's and the world’s most important and dynamic industries. It touches every aspect of our lives, our economy, and our future.  It represents over one million jobs, more than $150 billion in revenue to the U.S. economy, and the growth of thousands of cities, businesses, services, and manufacturing facilities around the world. 

General Aviation is relied on exclusively by more than 5,000 communities for their air transportation needs.  It serves about 19,200 landing facilities in the United States whereas scheduled airlines serve only about 500. Nearly 70 percent of the hours flown by general aviation are for business purposes.  Businesses include having access to a local airport as one of their top 10 decisions for where to locate their business.

Thousands of communities benefit from General Aviation in many ways.  Here are just a few ways that General Aviation impacts our communities:
